Core
Belief #3:
Look for the Good
by Marnie L. Pehrson
When I was seventeen, a wise man gave me some
inspired counsel that I've tried to follow ever since. "Continue to
search the scriptures, and look for the good things of this life," he
said. The apostle Paul admonished us similarly when he said to think on things
that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report, virtuous and
praiseworthy (Philippians 4:8). If we're thinking on these things, we don't
have much time to think on what is degrading, deceptive or destructive.
Thomas Jefferson once said, "I do not take a
single newspaper, nor read one a month, and I feel myself infinitely the
happier for it." I'm with Thomas Jefferson! There isn't much on the
nightly news that is true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report,
virtuous or praiseworthy. I don't watch the news; I don't read the newspaper;
and I don't even watch that much television. Like Jefferson, I'm all the
happier for it!
There are those who ask me how I can do this.
Shouldn't I be informed? Informed, yes, inundated, no. There are plenty of
people around me who keep me informed of the happenings in the world, I don't
need to be bombarded by it or seek it out. I've noticed that while many around
me live in fear of our degrading world, I don't. While others see the hate,
wickedness and abomination on every side, I see so many beautiful, talented
and good people.
Perhaps some might say I'm looking at the world
through rose-colored glasses and setting myself up for a fall. But, I've lived
my life like this for many years. In the process, I've learned an important
truth - what you seek is what you find. If you look for the good, you'll
find it. If you look for the bad, you'll find that too.
There is nothing I enjoy more than finding a
talented artist, author or musician and helping promote him/her to the world.
There is nothing my soul craves more than to discover some new truth in the
scriptures and teach it to all who will listen. I believe that looking for the
good and sharing it not only makes me happier, but it also helps brighten a
darkening world.
What good does it do for those of us striving to
live godly lives to focus on wickedness and depravity? Focusing on it surely
cannot cure it. No one ever became righteous by studying sin. No one ever
became rich by studying poverty. When we study what we fear, we only become
more fearful. When we study what uplifts and builds, our spirits rise higher.
"God has not given us the spirit of fear,
but of power and of love and a sound mind!" (2 Timothy 1: 7) We have
God's power and love at our fingertips. With Him on our side, we can conquer
fear, shine brightly, and be the means of doing much good in the world.
I challenge you to read a little less of the
newspaper and a little more of your scriptures. Watch a little less
television, and listen to a little more inspiring music. Spend a little less
time dwelling on what's wrong with those around you, and start looking for the
good in everyone. The interesting thing is that the more you focus on and
praise the good in others, the more they rise to your expectations. Even a
plant grows when it's encouraged; why not a child, a friend or even the quirky
neighbor next door?
